Vintage Mexican Silver Jewelry

Like serious collectors of Vintage Native American jewelry there are those that love old Vintage Mexican Silver for the diverse styles that were created during the 20th century.

Mexican silversmiths have been creating fine examples of silver work for centuries and are the ones that taught the Navajo how to work with this precious metal but it was William Spratling and Fred Davis during the 1920's and 1930's that are credited with creating a culture and teaching the native silversmiths the distict design formula that became so very popular with tourist around Taxco and Mexico City during the mid 20th century.

Although advanced collectors seek out pieces made by the famous listed artists such as William Spratling, Fred Davis, Margot de Taxco, Antonio Pineda, Sigi Pineda, Matilde Poulat and her nephew Ricardo Salas of matl, Hector Aguilar, Los Castillo, Los Ballesteros, Salvador Teran, Bernice Goodspeed and Hubert Harmon to name a few, a new collector will find that many of the currently unknown artists created pieces that were well made and learned their skills from the masters.

Penny Chittim Morrill and Carole A. Berk in their very popular book Mexican Silver state that the introduction of registration marks consisting of an Eagle with a number on the breast known as the Eagle Mark is said to have been intoduced in 1948 and used until 1970 at which time the Eagle Mark was no longer used and substituted with a marking system that used letters and numbers with the first letter representing the town that the mark is registered, the second letter for the artists or workshops last name and a number representing what order that mark was registered helping the collector to date a piece they are interested in.
